Topics covered include the exciting game design possibilities of room-scale VR and using SteamVR to write hardware-agnostic games. Zach Barth (Valve) Zach is a game designer and programmer at Valve, currently working on SteamVR. Prior to joining Valve, Zach was the creative director at the independent game studio Zachtronics, where he worked on SpaceChem, Infinifactory, and TIS-100. valvesoftware.com
This episode of Coders includes a talk with a trio of entrepreneurs looking to start a VR (Virtual Reality) company. Called UnrealVirtual, the founders hope to create VR content using cameras and 3D imaging tools. One challenge for VR on mobile: bandwidth. Capturing VR requires a lot of data usage, as a multitude of cameras must capture surrounding video for the richest experience. Viewing VR, especially as a group, means syncing up a lot of data across networks. Thus far, mobile VR has latency issues. UnrealVirtual is hoping carriers and providers will figure this piece out soon.

The dawn of Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) is glowing brighter than ever. With a groundbreaking number of VR/AR exhibitors at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017, we’re seeing VR/AR cameras and displays on everything from smartphones, to cars, to drones. Though gaming is often the first thing that comes to mind at the mention of these, the truth is that VR and AR have a huge opportunity to impact the way we work and create. Join our Safers for a coffee as they talk about what VR and AR mean for those of us in geospatial.
